How To Get Started

How To Get Started

Archery is a sport for all ages, from 8 to 108. It is a great way to get outdoors and engage in a sport that is as gentle, or as competitive, as you wish it to be. The first step, for all new archers, is to complete a beginners course.

Beginners Courses
Rivernook Bowmen run courses for everyone from age 8 and up. We run beginners courses in the spring and summer each year. Each course is made up of three sessions of two hours each, held over three consecutive weeks.

The course costs £70.00 per person (non-refundable) and includes the use of club equipment. This fee covers six hours of tuition by the Club’s experienced session coaches. The course will cover:

  1. Range Control
  2. Shooting Technique
  3. Main Elements of Archery
  4. Basic Archery Rules
  5. Use of Club Equipment
  6. Insurance covered by Archery GB

By the end of the course, Rivernook Bowmen’s aim is to get beginners onto the shooting line and shooting safely alongside more experienced club members. On successful completion of the course, beginners are awarded a signed Certificate of Completion.

We will be running courses in April, May and June 2026. If you would like to attend a Beginners Course at Rivernook, please contact us via the Beginners email address with names and ages of those to be added to the waiting list.

Taster Sessions
If there is sufficient demand, we also offer a 1-hour Taster Session which is £10.00 (non-refundable). If you would like to be added to the Taster Session waiting list please contact the club via the Beginners email address.

Attending a course enables you to experience archery in a safe and controlled environment and includes use of club equipment. Once you have completed a beginners course, you can then join the club. Further information about joining the club is on the How to Join/Renew page.
